Phuket on the move: Strategies for a prosperous future!
On November 3, 2025, an important “Coffee Conference of Heads of Departments of the Ministry of Interior” organized by Governor Saran Sak Srikhruenet was held at the Phuket Governor's Boardroom. The purpose of this meeting was to exchange opinions and strategies on the development of Phuket Province. The aim is to improve the living standards of the residents and make the region more attractive for tourists. The focus was on important tasks that were examined by nine sub-working groups.
The topics discussed at the conference are important for future development. These included questions of traffic management, while particular attention was given to lighting in tunnels and the regulation of boat taxis. The discussions also focused on waste management in the province and efficient handling of drinking and wastewater. Plans were also made to store water from the mountains for dry periods in order to secure water resources in the long term.
Social order and security
Another important point was the problems of land use, which are relevant in the context of rapidly growing tourism. The discussion about healthcare, particularly in relation to medicines, food and cannabis, shows that a modernized approach to many topics is essential. In addition, urban development and landscape design were discussed, which are aimed at implementing the MICE City concept in Phuket.
The installation of surveillance cameras in important areas should contribute to the safety of tourists. Another aspect that should be part of social order is the supervision of local businesses and the regulation of beaches, where parasols and loungers must provide an orderly appearance in the long term. All of these measures are intended to work together to transform Phuket into a livable, drug-free area, as envisaged in the “To Be Number One” project discussed at the conference.
Economic impulses through MICE
In another initiative, parallel to the conference, the MICE sector in Phuket will be strengthened through the project “The Southern MICE District: Phuket Series”. This important initiative was launched by the Office of the Promotion of Meetings and Exhibitions (TCEB) to stimulate the regional economy and further develop the MICE economic area. The focus is on the “3S” strategy – Spend more, Stay longer, See you again – in order to encourage MICE travelers to spend more and spend longer.
With the aim of optimizing the needs and experiences of MICE travelers, creative MICE zones are being created in Phuket. These include The Old Town, The North Wind, The Lagoon and The South Shore. These zones revolve around the culture, history and way of life of Phuket and offer a varied supporting program for visitors. The forecast for 2025 shows an impressive number of 34 million MICE travelers, projecting revenue of 200 billion baht.
Phuket, Thailand's second smallest province, is already known as a major tourism center. The economy used to be heavily dominated by tin and rubber production, and it is estimated that over 100,000 foreigners now live on the island. Due to its location on one of the most important trade routes between India and China, Phuket has a fascinating history that is also reflected in the modern MICE sector.
Phuket has big plans for the future, both to strengthen the local quality of life and to promote the remarkable development of the MICE sector. If they succeed, the island could not only become an even more attractive place for visitors, but also a role model for other provinces in Thailand.
