Phuket fights against traffic jams: Politicians call for a quick tunnel project!
On November 1, Phuket MP Thitikan Thitipruethikul raised a pressing concern on Facebook: the Kathu to Patong tunnel project. This project has been requested for over 30 years now to address the ongoing traffic problems and high accident rates in the Patong area. “The citizens of Phuket have the right to safe and toll-free main roads,” said Thitikan, who is also spokesman for a commission that is examining a new law on amnesty for citizens harmed by state policies. He also raised questions about possible conflicts of interest that might exist among the project's contractors.
His commitment to the tunnel project remains undiminished, despite concerns expressed from various quarters. He calls for rapid implementation, while at the same time there are doubts as to whether the transport minister will actually push forward with construction work. “We must ensure that this project is not put on hold again,” Thitikan continued.
Heroines Monument underpass project halted
The original plan was to build a two-kilometer-long, three-lane tunnel under the Victory Monument. This measure was particularly intended to ease traffic jams at the Tha Ruea intersection, one of the island's most important junctions. Despite the preparatory work that has already begun, such as moving utility poles, the future of the project remains uncertain. The local administration will now have to think about how to better solve the traffic problems in this key area.
The traffic situation remains tense
The traffic problems around the Tha Ruea intersection remain unresolved. This road represents an important link between Phuket International Airport and tourist destinations in the south of the island. At the same time, traffic has increased significantly in recent years, particularly in areas such as Bang Tao and Cherng Talay, increasing pressure on local transport planners.
Meanwhile, the Phuket Highway Office will try to manage the situation with the existing road network. Nevertheless, the need for improved transport structures and solutions for the local population and tourists remains a hot topic.
