Sovereignty in focus: Thailand's Prime Minister warns Cambodia of the consequences!

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the Phumakea military base in Si Sa Ket on November 11, 2025. During his visit he was received by Lieutenant General Weerayut Raksilp, commander of the 2nd Army. Anutin took the opportunity to learn about various challenges faced by the security forces at the border, which include security missions, patrols and support to the local population. To show his commitment to the nation, the Prime Minister honored the Thai flag at the top of the base at 6:00 p.m. to underline Thai sovereignty. He made it clear that Thailand will not allow other countries, especially Cambodia, to challenge its sovereignty. Therefore, the previously concluded peacekeeping agreements are no longer considered valid

Security situation at the border

Anutin Charnvirakul informed about the increased measures needed to ensure national security. He explained that the Thai armed forces are already informed of the necessary measures, although no specific details were revealed. Also notable is that he accused Cambodia of violating the agreements by placing landmines in Thai territory. Of the original four mines, one has already been detonated by Thai soldiers, while only three remain. This illustrates the tense situation at the border.

As the meeting continued, Anutin noted that Thailand was patient, but Cambodia's non-compliance with the agreements was unacceptable. He emphasized Thailand's personal responsibility by stating that the country does not have to report to other countries, including the United States. He also called for preserving the sovereignty and reputation of the Thai armed forces and people. Anutin asked the media to refrain from raising questions about national security matters, stressing the importance of military support in such issues.

Conflict background and current developments

The context of these tensions has worsened significantly in recent months. It was not until the summer of 2025 that fierce fighting broke out in the Cambodian-Thai border region, causing tens of thousands of people to flee. These fighting began on July 26 and involved the use of heavy weapons and artillery from both sides. Although Cambodia called for an immediate ceasefire during a UN Security Council meeting, Thailand refused, citing that Cambodia's attacks on Thai residential areas in Surin made a return to normality impossible. As a result, around 130,000 people were evacuated from Surin province, which illustrates the drama of the situation.

Political experts in the region see the need for a return to the 2000 Boundary Commission to find a diplomatic solution. Given current tensions and historical conflicts, such as the Prear Vihear Temple in 2011, the question remains how the two countries can find peace. Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura warned that it was too early to predict the end of the conflict. There were also reports of the increased danger to the civilian population caused by the military conflicts in the region, which is forcing many people to leave their homes.

It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and whether the Thai government will be able to maintain its sovereignty while finding a peaceful solution in dealing with Cambodia. Anutin Charnvirakul and the Thai Armed Forces are under great pressure to ensure the stability and security of the country at this critical time.
