Sustainable tourism: Phuket in the focus of the ASEAN Commission!
An important milestone in international cooperation for sustainable development was set yesterday in Phuket, the charming pearl of Thailand. A high-level Senate Foreign Affairs Commission led by Senator Chavaphon Watthanavekin and Senator Chib Chitniyom traveled to the coast to explore the island's strategies for sustainable economic growth. The focus was on Phuket's role within the ASEAN framework and strengthening its competitiveness.
When we arrived at Phuket Airport, a varied program was already waiting. In the Governor's Building, the senators discussed current trends in digitalization and the use of big data to promote sustainable tourism. It became clear that managing data on foreign tourists and proactive security technology are key points in overcoming the challenges of mass tourism. At the same time, workforce management and the development of local skilled workers are on the agenda.
Cultural identity and sustainable tourism
A visit to the old part of Phuket was one of the main activities. Here the senators researched international cooperation approaches to promote sustainable development. On Thalang Road, which is being touted as a potential cultural landmark, the combination of conservation, creative approaches and global tourism has been particularly emphasized. The focus is on preserving community identity and historical heritage and should contribute to economic value creation.
It is particularly important to include all voices from society – from the public to the private sector to local communities – in political decision-making processes. The aim is to find a balance between urban development and the preservation of historical values. Moss and art from the historical architecture of the Sino-Portuguese are to be protected in order to promote Phuket's cultural heritage as a center for high-quality tourism worldwide.
Tourism sector recovery
What many people don't know: Phuket is not only a feast for the eyes with beautiful beaches, it also plays a central role in the Thai economic landscape. After the difficult times during the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism sector has recovered properly. Since travel restrictions were relaxed at the end of 2022, visitor numbers have increased rapidly. Sales in the tourism industry have improved significantly compared to the previous year. This makes Phuket a magnet for international tourists, especially from Russia, who are among the largest groups of visitors in the wake of the pandemic.
But the island doesn't want to rely solely on tourism. The focus on diversification is becoming increasingly important. Sectors such as international education, medical services and skilled worker training are becoming increasingly important to reduce dependence on tourism. Phuket is also being positioned as an exhibition and convention center as planned to generate additional revenue streams.
The tourism challenges should not be underestimated: the pandemic has clearly shown how vulnerable the region is, which is dependent on foreign travelers. Nevertheless, Phuket is optimistic about the future and is committed to sustainable growth strategies to not only stimulate the local economy, but also further strengthen the national brand of Thailand.
In summary, Phuket is well on its way to becoming more important in international cooperation for sustainable development and as a tourist destination. The information collected by the Commission and exchanges with local actors could shape the future of the island.
