Tragedy in Kata: New Zealand tourist found dead in hotel room

A shocking tragedy has occurred at a hotel near Kata Beach. A 47-year-old New Zealand tourist was found dead in her room after hotel staff alerted Karon police at 2.45pm because the woman was unresponsive. The initial investigation suggests she may have died hours earlier. Hotel staff found the woman on her bed with no obvious signs of a struggle or injuries, reports The Thaiger.

During an initial search of her room, investigators found prescription medications, including antidepressants, as well as three open cans of alcohol and two cocktail glasses. Police believe there may have been a potentially fatal interaction between the medication and the alcoholic beverages, which ultimately led to respiratory failure. A preliminary forensic report supports this assumption.

Details of the last few hours

A German friend of the deceased, 49 years old, alerted the hotel staff after he noticed that she was no longer breathing. The man said they had previously consumed alcohol together in a bar in Kata and returned to the hotel at around 1am. According to him, the woman had consumed a significant amount of alcohol and there was another drink in the room before she fell asleep.

When the hotel staff woke him up by knocking at lunchtime, he discovered that the woman was no longer alive. Police then interviewed the man and conducted both a drug test and a physical examination, both of which returned negative results. CCTV footage and hotel entry logs confirmed his statements that they returned together and no one else entered the room that night.

Investigations continue

Bar staff have also confirmed there were no arguments or suspicious behavior before the couple left. Forensic investigators estimate the woman died 8 to 10 hours before she was discovered, putting the likely time of death between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. Police photographed the crime scene and collected evidence to further investigate the incident.

The tourist's body was transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy. Karon police confirmed the case remains under investigation. The tragedy also sheds light on the security situation for tourists in Thailand, a country consistently perceived as dangerous for foreigners, as stated in a recent report by the Mirror was outlined.
