Operation Cut Down Scam”: 9 million data leaks uncovered in Thailand!

Yesterday, November 6, 2025, the Thai Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, in collaboration with the national police, launched the large-scale operation “Cut Down Scam”. The aim of this operation is to combat networks that sell personal data and increase security in the digital space. How PPTV HD 36 reported, during this operation over 9 million citizen records were discovered that were identified as leaked.

In total, searches were carried out in eight provinces - including Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Saraburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chonburi and Phuket. During this investigation, six suspects were arrested on suspicion of collecting, possessing or using personal information for criminal activities. The penalty for such offenses can reach up to 5 years in prison or a fine of up to 500,000 baht.

Data trading and online fraud

The items searched were revealing: six computers, 17 cell phones, nine data storage devices and seven bank accounts were seized. According to the investigation, the suspects obtained the personal information through online fraud, illegal investment offers and gambling sites. What's particularly alarming is that a Facebook page called "Gray Marketing" was found offering personal information at prices ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 baht for 100,000 records, like this Bangkok Times reported.

When police went undercover, they uncovered a staggering amount of over 2.3 million genuine records linked to 4,630 previously reported fraud cases, with an estimated total loss of over 298 million baht. The suspects said that the majority of the data came from illegal online gambling sites and fraudulent apps.

Rising cyber threats in Thailand

The current situation is part of a much larger problem affecting Thailand. Again Bangkok Post reports, the country faces a 70% higher rate of cyberattacks than the global average. Phishing and bank fraud are the most common threats. Thai bank customers have lost over 60 billion baht to online financial fraud in the past two years. This frightening scenario increases pressure on security authorities and companies to invest more in cybersecurity.

The combination of organized crime and the alarming increase in cyberattacks underscores the need for the public to be more careful with their personal information. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and the national police call on all citizens to carefully check the credibility of data requests and to inform themselves about the risks in the digital space.

Operation Cut Down Scam is an important step in a fight that goes far beyond the arrests. Ultimately, it's about people's security and trust in an increasingly digital world.
