Thailand sets sail: Phuket becomes a maritime tourism center in Asia!
The Thailand Boat Festival 2026, held at Phuket Boat Lagoon from January 15 to 18, was a celebration for boating and yachting lovers. The event celebrated the return to the origins of Thailand's first international marine exhibition, which is now taking place there again after almost 20 years. Over 44 yachts from 24 international brands were on display, a true showcase of maritime tourism in the heart of Phuket.
However, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has even bigger plans. Their goal is to make Thailand the leading maritime tourism destination in all of Southeast Asia. The concept of the 'Andaman Gateway' strategy aims to connect Phuket, Krabi and Satun with neighboring countries such as Langkawi in Malaysia and Sabang in Indonesia. This strategy could elevate Phuket into a premier destination for international sailors and luxury travelers, with a clear focus on high-end yachting and cruise travel. This reports Nation of Thailand.
Invitation to all water sports fans
Coming back to the festival, during the event there was an exciting seminar on Thailand's potential as a leading marine tourism destination. Digital payment solutions, such as converting cryptocurrencies into Thai Baht, were also presented. A highlight was the discussion on the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT), which aimed to harmonize maritime regulations and create a seamless “Blue Economy” that is expected to be beneficial for both the economy and the environment.
Tickets for the festival were available for 100 THB per person per day, while VIP tickets cost 3,000 THB. Visitors could enjoy daily opening hours that ranged from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Bangkok Hospital Phuket provided medical support on site - an important measure to ensure the safety of all participants. Organizing media partners such as Asia Pacific Boating Magazine helped make the event a central meeting point for everyone interested in maritime tourism.
The way into the future
TAT's plans are no coincidence. Thailand was a popular travel destination before the pandemic, contributing about 20 percent of gross domestic product. However, the Thai government has also recognized that mass tourism has its downsides, such as overcrowding and pollution. Therefore, the focus is increasingly shifting to sustainable tourism. In 2024, Thailand expects a revival of the tourism industry that will attract 35 million international tourists, and a greater focus on quality tourism that benefits local communities is firmly established.
The Thailand Boat Festival could play a key role in supporting this change and positioning the Andaman Sea region as an innovative and sustainable destination. The event not only brought together the maritime community in Thailand, but also promoted commitment to environmental friendliness, which is becoming increasingly important in the tourism industry, such as Thailand Magazine explained in detail.
The convergence of high-quality tourism offerings, such as the Thailand Boat Festival, and a strategy that focuses on the environment and local communities could lead Phuket and surrounding areas into a thriving new era of sustainable tourism.
