Thailand and Germany: Trade targets of 11 billion dollars by 2027!
On October 16, 2025, a significant meeting took place between the Thai Prime Minister and Team Thailand. The main objective of this meeting was to set ambitious bilateral trade targets, reaching a value of 11,000 million US dollars by 2027, as Thairath reported.
The meeting comes at a time when Thailand is steadily expanding its role as an important trading partner, especially for Germany. Germany is not only Thailand's most important trading partner in the European Union, but also one of the most important partners in the Southeast Asian region. This is reflected, among other things, in the close cooperation between both countries in multilateral institutions and the active presence of around 600 German companies in Thailand.
Traditional relationships and today's developments
The trade relations between Germany and Thailand have a long history. A trade agreement between the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg, Lübeck and Bremen and the Kingdom of Siam was signed in 1858. This historical foundation forms the framework for today's intensive economic and cultural cooperation, which is strengthened by numerous initiatives such as the Goethe-Institut Thailand. This not only supports language courses, but also cultural exchange programs that promote understanding between the two peoples.
Particularly noteworthy is the cultural agreement of 1984, which continues to be actively promoted. Over 245 collaborations between German and Thai universities provide academic exchange with a breath of fresh air. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) also offers valuable support through scholarships and study advice.
The future in sight
According to forecasts, around 800,000 German tourists will visit Thailand by 2024. This shows how much interest there is in Thailand as a travel destination, which ultimately benefits local economic growth. In this context, the Thai Foreign Ministry is increasing its efforts to improve recommendations and exchanges between the two nations. The initiatives include, among other things, the promotion of the “German-Southeast Asian Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Good Governance” (CPG), which is intended to contribute to improving the legal framework in Thailand.
By establishing such partnerships and goals, Thailand is well positioned to continue to shine as a major player in the ASEAN region. The continuous development of bilateral trade goals will not only strengthen economic cooperation but also deepen cultural and social ties between both countries, as well diplomatic information prove.
